Department of History Postgraduate Programs
Ph.D. Program
Purpose of the Program: To deepen and specialize in one of the fields of historical problematics, periods and geographies within the understanding of universal history; to adapt past experiences to the present; To be able to offer solutions to current problems encountered.
Importance of the Program: Illuminating the dark spots in national and local scale historical studies; Developing new and current perspectives on historical events; Ensuring the correct positioning of Turkish history within the universal civilization; Strengthening the position of Turkish historiography with in-depth and qualified history research; Bringing Turkish historians to a competitive level among universal history studies.
Application Requirements: To graduate from one of the History Department Master's with Thesis (within the field) or Humanities and Social Sciences (out of the field) Master's with Thesis. "Scientific Preparation" will be applied in case of graduating from a non-field Master's program with a thesis. ALES and YDS scores must be at least 55.
Courses of the Program: Research Methods in Social Sciences and Publication Ethics, Turkish Education History, Archival Resources and Diplomacy, Enlightenment in Europe and the Birth of the Modern State, Single Party Administration in Turkey, Balkans Under Ottoman Domination, XIX. Change in Ottoman Bureaucracy in the Century, History of Ottoman Institutions, State and Organization in the Steppe, Classical Ottoman Law, Reception Process in Ottoman Law, Urbanism in the Ottoman Empire, Foundation System in the Ottoman Empire, Politics.
Skills Gained and Academic Accumulation: A good grasp of the dynamics that shaped the early modern ages; able to read well the movements and currents that shape the modern world; able to penetrate directly into the sources of research periods; who knows the language and knows the outside world well; able to follow the domestic and foreign literature and agenda related to their field; To train innovative and competitive researchers and historians who can change and direct this agenda when appropriate.
Graduation Requirements: To be successful in the compulsory and elective courses that must be taken in the History Department of the Doctorate Program; take at least 10 courses and 1 seminar course; to complete 240 ECTS credits in total; To be found successful by the Thesis Jury with the PhD Thesis submitted and defended within the legal time limit.
Post-Graduation Work Opportunities: Those who have completed this program can work as Research Assistant, Lecturer, Dr. They can be employed as Faculty Members. They can work as specialists in museums and archives.
History of the Republic of Turkey Master's Program
General Description: The History Department, which was established within the body of Eskişehir Osmangazi University on August 18, 1993 within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, carries out the activities of the History of the Republic of Turkey Master's Program under the Social Sciences Institute of Eskişehir Osmangazi University, which was established on 18.08.1993.
Admission and Registration Conditions: Certificate of license; To have obtained at least 55 from the relevant branch of the Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES); To have at least 55 in the Graduate Science Examination.
Rules on Recognition of Prior Learning: Recognition of the courses that the student has taken and succeeded while enrolled in a graduate program of another university, the application showing the course content and transcript after enrolling in the same graduate program at Eskişehir Osmangazi University, the recommendation of the advisor, the opinion of the department chair and the decision of the institute board of directors. The courses taken by the students participating in the exchange programs from the host university are considered as elective or compulsory courses.
Qualification Requirements and Rules: 2 years, 2 semesters in 1 year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS.
Purpose of the Program: Closely following the developments in Turkey and the world, knowing the historical origins of these developments, having the ability to look at events with an academic depth, sensitive to national and global events, internalizing the objectivity and critical approach, having the knowledge of sources and the ability to use the sources correctly, and equipped to evaluate the latest developments in historiography in the world. - To know and analyze Turkey's political, economic and cultural elements
- To be aware of the changes and transformations that Turkey has gone through from the Ottoman period to the Republic and to establish the necessary connections.
- To have an idea about the development of Turkish political thought from the Ottoman period to the Republic of Turkey and to be able to make original comments.
- To be familiar with the socio-cultural and economic structure of modern Turkey and to be able to analyze this structure.
- Being able to read the last period of Ottoman Turkish and find it in archives researches with this skill.
- To have a good grasp of local developments in the history of the Republic of Turkey and to make connections by making socio-political comparisons
- To produce academic articles and to give seminars.

New Ages History Master’s Program
Purpose of the Program: Will be able to comprehend all aspects and in depth the important transformations that took place in the New Ages, when the foundations of the modern world were laid; with this understanding, they will be able to analyze the modern world in a healthier way; has adopted scientific methods, consistency and ethical perspective, and is open to innovations; equipping themselves with the methods and skills of the age they live in; is to raise students and researchers who are curious, diligent and concerned about progress. It is hoped that this will contribute to the advancement of Turkish culture and civilization; It is foreseen that it will contribute to the enrichment of the universal culture and civilization.
Importance of the Program: To better demonstrate the role Turkish culture and civilization played in the shaping and rise of modern Western culture and civilization; A better understanding of the effects of the Turkish heritage in Eastern Europe and the Balkan geography on today's historical geography; better analysis of the historical roots of today's national cultures and universal values.
Application Requirements: ALES 55; YDS 40; To graduate from the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences (Scientific Preparation program is applied for applications from outside of these fields)
Courses in the Content of the Program: Ottoman State Organization; Resources in Ottoman History Studies I-II; Ottoman History I-II (1299-1600/1600-1789); Economic Structure in the Ottoman Empire; Urban History Studies; Ottoman Campaign History and Logistics; Ottoman Archive Documents I-II; and Research Methods in Social Sciences and Publication Ethics.
